MK Irish lost for the first time during pre-season on Tuesday, in a 3-1 defeat against Southern League opponents Berkhamsted.

Irish started well and hit the bar early on, as Mason Spence almost followed on from his hat-trick at the weekend with a header from Liam Smyth’s freekick that struck the bar.

The game had an even tone however chances were hard to come by for both sides, as MK Irish pressed well in response to Berkhamsted’s attempts to play out from the back.

With the game goalless Terry Shrieves’ side were very unfortunate not to be given a penalty, after Tom Oldfield’s shirt was clearly being pulled by the opposition defender whilst a corner was on its way into the box.

Alex Marius was next to go close for Irish, calling the Berkhamsted goalkeeper into action with an effort after a cutback cross from Spence and also firing over the bar after a ball through from George Shrieves.

The home side couldn’t make those chances count, as the visitors opened the scoring. Some poor marking left an attacker with a free header from a corner to make it 1-0 as the teams went into half-time.

As the second half began Berkhamsted quickly doubled their their lead, as one of their midfielders drove forward with the ball before playing it out wide, and then continuing his run to find space at the back post and tap home after a good one-two.

Irish quickly found themselves further behind after the referee pointed to the spot, with Owusu being sent the wrong way in goal to make it 3-0.

MK Irish almost found a goal back soon after the penalty, as Jack Clarkson held up the ball well on the edge of the box and played it across to Spence, who’s shot went just wide of the post.
