MK Irish produced a clinical late surge to secure an impressive 4–1 victory away at London Lions, scoring three times in the final minutes to turn a tight contest into a convincing win.
It was a bright afternoon in North London, and while both sides looked to play on a good surface, clear chances were limited in the early stages.
The hosts created the first opening, but Tom Ladyman was untroubled as he gathered comfortably. Irish responded with a promising move as Nat Beecher drove forward from defence and combined with Mason Spence and Owen Brooks, though the final cross just evaded its target.
The breakthrough came on 27 minutes. Ryan Smith picked out Clinton Zawe’s run down the right, and although his cross was cut out, the ball fell kindly to JJ Meadows inside the box. He struck low first time, finding the near corner to give Irish the lead.
London Lions responded well and nearly levelled shortly after, sending a effort wide before a deflected strike forced Ladyman into action. Irish continued to pose a threat, with Brooks going close after being played through, but his effort drifted wide.
The hosts found their equaliser on 38 minutes. A well-weighted pass split the defence and allowed the forward to run through and finish calmly past Ladyman to make it 1–1.
Half Time: London Lions 1–1 MK Irish
London Lions started the second half strongly and created a number of good opportunities. A low effort was saved by Ladyman, before two clear chances inside the box were put narrowly wide as Irish were forced to withstand a difficult spell.
The introduction of George Shrieves helped shift the momentum. He was immediately involved, going close from a low cross after good work from Brooks, but the goalkeeper produced a strong save at close range.
Irish began to take control as the half progressed. Brooks saw an effort deflected wide, while Shrieves had a shot blocked from the edge of the box. Meadows then flicked a cross towards goal before seeing another effort saved after good link-up play involving Ryan Smith.
Spence continued to influence proceedings with dangerous deliveries, and Irish pushed forward in search of a winner. Meadows headed over from a free kick, while Brooks was denied after taking an extra touch inside the area.
The breakthrough finally arrived in the 89th minute. Shrieves received the ball on the right and, after his initial cross was cut out, he regained possession and laid it back to Ryan Smith on the edge of the box. Smith took a touch before sending a superb effort into the far top corner.
Irish struck again on 91 minutes. A loose pass across the back was seized upon by Shrieves, who kept his composure to finish past the goalkeeper and extend the lead.
There was still time for a fourth on 93 minutes. Beecher played a long ball forward and Brooks gambled on his run as the Lions defence was slow to push up. He controlled it well, rounded the goalkeeper and rolled the ball into an empty net to complete the scoring.
